Dear Headland UMC Family;

In light of all that we have heard over this last week with the coronavirus concerns, I wanted to take a moment to let you know what we at the church are doing in preparation in keeping everyone safe and informed.

The following is an excerpt from a letter I just received from Bishop Graves:
“These are unbelievable times for us all. As one who could not imagine canceling worship services, I cannot remember a circumstance in my lifetime when churches were asked to suspend worship services and meetings.
As I watched social media this weekend, I marveled at the creativity and leadership of our churches and pastors. The Alabama-West Florida Conference is filled with Christ-centered followers. It is a blessing to be your bishop. Yet, I write to you today specifically around the COVID-19 pandemic. Health experts warn us that it is in the best interest of church members, especially those in the high-risk categories, the community, the states of Alabama and Florida, our nation, and the world for us to stop assembling for a time of worship services and other group meetings. We have been told the best time to slow down the spread of the contagious coronavirus is now. We need to take measures to avoid large gatherings of people along with practicing social distancing. Many of you did that this past Sunday by canceling worship services and using social media to reach your congregation and beyond.

It is out of the plea from national and local health officials that I urge and request for at least the remainder of March all our Alabama-West Florida United Methodist Churches suspend in-person worship and other large gatherings. We will assess the situation week-by-week to determine when it is safe to resume worship services. It is a day-to-day, week-to-week and at times hour-by-hour situation.”

Please, remember that although our worship services and other activities are canceled for this brief season, our relationship with Jesus and the Church continues each day. Be mindful, expenses of church continue every day as well. Please continue to give electronically through the Give Plus App. (if you are not signed up, download the app it only takes a few minutes) or simply mail in your tithes and extra offerings.
Finally, a moment of vulnerable transparency: moving away from gathering together in-person, even for a period of a few weeks, will have an impact on our church family. Please continue to join us in prayer, asking for the mercy of God to be made manifest toward those suffering from this virus and for all of those caring for them and loving them. May our loving God bring healing and restoration, and may it come soon.

In the meantime, we will be making use of e-mail, Facebook, and other forms of social media and communication as alternative ways of gathering together, checking in with one another, sharing cares and concern, and living, loving, and serving one another like Jesus. For those who do not easily engage with e-mail or social media, I will have hard copies of my sermons available and we can mail them out if requested.

Let’s get busy serving our community while practicing social distancing. Pray for one another. Practice healthy hygiene. Check on the elderly and those with weakened immune systems. Support our local businesses. Be a good neighbor. Serve the least of these. Offer hope.
Headland UMC is community first. I urge you to not withdraw, but instead be present during our online gatherings, in prayer, and in service. How we handle this moment will demonstrate to our wider community that relationships matter at HUMC. I look forward to worshipping with you online on Sunday.

Christ’s peace to all of you, and please feel free to reach out to me via the church office (334-693-2956), cell (251-401-7766), or by e-mail, headlandumcrev@comcast.net. I am here for you, for prayer, conversations, and any ministerial needs you may have.

"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." 2 Tim. 1:7

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go. "Joshua 1:9
